Huawei Nova Y70 Review: Stylish and Affordable

A couple of years ago, Huawei set the trend for bright gradients in smartphones. Since then, getting a completely black device for review has become an almost impossible task. What was my surprise when, during the next unpacking, I found a rather stylish and maximally glossy Huawei Nova Y70. Well, let’s see what’s inside.

Design

In the style of flagship models

The appearance of the smartphone is as concise as possible: no patterns and other decorative elements that distract the eye, only a glossy glass-like panel. Who cares, but I missed this design. The camera block located on the back of the smartphone has a rather unique oval shape, which distinguishes it from its rectangular neighbors in the price segment.

Alas, here it’s worth talking about the minus of such a decision: the smartphone gets dirty very easily. We are talking about both fingerprints and dust around the protruding element. Fortunately, a silicone case is included with the device, which allows you to escape the harsh reality.

On the side, the smartphone looks a little less elegant: the matte plastic frames typical of the current year with a cutout for a fingerprint scanner. Despite the impressive dimensions (168.3 × 77.7 × 8.98 mm) and weight (199 grams), the smartphone is confidently held in the hand and does not strive to slip out – even in the branded silicone case.

Display

Good brightness, mediocre resolution

In terms of display quality, the Huawei Nova Y70 is rather vague. On the one hand, the smartphone was equipped with a very bright, as for IPS, screen that does not raise questions when used. On the other hand, 1600 × 720 pixels by 6.75 inches is still not enough for 2022. If you look closely, you can see ladders on small details and text that are not pleasing to the eye. The value of the density of pixels per inch in this case is only 260 ppi.

Iron

No lags and freezes

Huawei Nova Y70 is powered by the company’s own Kirin 710A processor. Paired with the chipset, 4 GB of RAM are working – not too much, but enough for everyday tasks. In normal use, the smartphone gives the impression of a fairly nimble device that has no problems with hardware. This is true for games as well. World of Tanks, as the most popular gaming benchmark on smartphones, keeps a solid 60 FPS on medium settings. Playable in my opinion.

In synthetics, the smartphone performs poorly, gaining only 298 points in the Geekbench 5 single-core test and noticeably degrading performance after 10 minutes in the CPU Throttling Test. However, it should be noted that the smartphone almost does not heat up during the entire action. From what surprised me, I would like to note that Huawei Nova Y70 does not support Wi-Fi networks with a frequency of 5 GHz.

As a system, Huawei uses the proprietary EMUI 12, which has a cute appearance, but is clearly not suitable for pure Android supporters. Out of the box, the smartphone has a whole page with shortcuts for applications offered for installation. Of course, this is all cleaned, but it catches the eye.

Camera

The realm of AI and algorithms

There are three cameras on the back of the Huawei Nova Y70:

  • the main one at 48 megapixels with f / 1.8 aperture;
  • 5MP ultra wide-angle with f/2.2 aperture and 120° field of view;
  • 2MP depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture.

The 48-megapixel main module captures sharp and vibrant images that will definitely meet the needs of most potential buyers. If you zoom in on photos, you can see the strong work of AI: the smartphone tightens the sharpness after saving the picture, which does not always benefit the artistic intent of the photographer. What pleased me, Huawei Nova Y70 copes well with dimly lit places, exposing the shutter speed more authentically.

Shot with Huawei Nova Y70 Ultra Wide Camera

The situation is worse with the photo on the ultra-wide-angle camera and the front camera. Both modules produce fairly grainy shots with little detail, even in perfect lighting.

I note that the front camera supports proprietary Huawei face enhancers, which may be to someone’s taste.

All battery test results and test methodology description

The smartphone received a battery of as much as 6000 mAh, which allowed it to take one of the highest positions in the Trashbox.ru battery test. Huawei Nova Y70 will be a great option for those who do not like to depend on the outlet. If you still manage to put the device to zero, a powerful 22.5 W charger that comes with the kit will come to the rescue. By the way, the smartphone itself can also be used as a power bank: it can output 5 V 1 A when an appropriate cable with USB Type-C is connected at both ends. Sometimes it’s really necessary.

Review

After a week of use

After spending a week with the Huawei Nova Y70, I got the impression that this is a nice inexpensive smartphone that can please a wide audience. In addition to its bright dim design, which I wrote about above, it can offer impeccable autonomy and very smooth operation. Even cons like the lack of support for 5 GHz Wi-Fi and the low resolution of the display are not very striking against the background of the overall “quality factor” of the smartphone.

pros

  • Good performance.
  • Bright display.
  • Impressive autonomy.
  • Atypical design.
  • Decent main camera.

Minuses

  • Low resolution.
  • No 5GHz Wi-Fi support.
  • The ultra wide-angle and front cameras leave much to be desired.
