The Brazilian government does not intend to prohibit the Chinese company Huawei Technologies from participating in the construction of local 5G networks. Auctions for the sale of 5G frequencies are scheduled for June this year. This was reported by the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, citing government and industry sources.
According to the publication, President Jair Bolsonaro has abandoned his previous position – not to allow Huawei to build 5G networks – in connection with the departure of Donald Trump from the presidency of the United States. Earlier, Bolsonaro supported the baseless accusations made by the American leadership that Huawei allegedly shares confidential data with the Chinese communist government.
China is Brazil’s largest trading partner. Given this and the ability of the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer to offer the most attractive prices, Bolsonaro faced resistance from industry and government representatives, including Vice President Hamilton Mourao.
Mourao said that all companies that provide the necessary guarantees to respect Brazil’s national sovereignty and data protection will be allowed to offer 5G equipment in the country.
