Many residents of the Texas border town of Del Rio have been complaining for months that they have been forgotten by the federal government. at a time when arrests of illegal immigrants in the area have reached a high of twenty years.
Now with about 16,000 illegal immigrants living in dangerous conditions under the bridge that connects Del Rio with the Mexican city of Ciudad Acunia, the anger of the residents is increasing.
On Friday night, a lawyer from Del Rio complained in a Facebook post that school buses were carrying migrants, mostly Haitians, to reception centers.
“The same buses that our children will get on on Monday !!!”, wrote Jacques de la Motta, posting photos of a yellow schoolboy picking up immigrants.
De la Motta’s post was shared at least 1,400 times and received more than 300 comments, many from locals who complained that they were worried about the possibility of diseases due to immigrants. But some criticized the racism of the post.
The head of the local school district announced that only two school buses, which are not currently used to transport students, took part in the migrant transport operation.
The disturbance with the school buses is indicative of the dissatisfaction that prevails in this city of 35,000 inhabitants – of which 85% are Hispanic – about immigration.
Many residents are also outraged by the closure of the bridge to Mexico on Friday due to the large number of migrants, which has resulted in heavy economic losses on both sides of the border.
A small group of Del Rio residents staged a demonstration on Saturday, with a woman holding a banner reading “Biden Border Crisis”. A Reuters reporter also saw a truck carrying a flag with the slogan “Biden c @@ i” written on it. Another driver who crossed the bridge last week looked down at the hundreds of migrants who have camped there and commented that Del Rio residents could easily move to Mexico.

Biden in the crosshairs
The city of Val Verde, whose capital is Del Rio, voted by a ten-point margin in favor of Donald Trump in the 2020 election as many residents approved of his harsh immigration policy. The mayor of the city, Bruno Lozano, does not hide his anger towards the government of the Democratic President of the USA.
“Where is their plan to protect American communities on the southern border?” He wrote on Twitter on Saturday. “I spoke to Governor (Texas Greg) Abbott today. “We have drawn up a temporary plan, we would like to see yours,” he added.
Arguing that Biden’s promise of a more “humane” approach to immigration has encouraged illegal immigrants, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has cracked down.

Among them: the arrest of immigrants on charges of trespassing on property and the preparation for the construction of part of the wall on the border with Mexico, which Trump had promised and the construction of which was suspended as soon as Biden took over the US presidency.
Abbott has been criticized for handling a catastrophic storm in February and the covid-19 pandemic. The border crisis is likely to boost the popularity of the Texas governor as well as Republicans in general, according to James Henson, director of The Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin.
De la Motta, a descendant of Mexicans who immigrated to the United States many generations ago, is a Democratic voter, but stressed that the border crisis means that Biden cannot rely on his vote. “It makes me think about what I will do,” he explained.
