The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, made a post to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) wishing him a good recovery this Tuesday (10). The Brazilian head of state underwent head surgery to drain a hematoma.
Maduro posted a photo of Lula and highlighted that he is following the PT member’s situation “closely”, conveying solidarity and wishes for a speedy recovery “so that he can soon return to his full activities at the head of the sister Federative Republic of Brazil”.
“Our hug, brother Lula! We are with you!”, concluded the chavista.
Lula was admitted to a hospital in Brasília this Tuesday for an imaging test after experiencing headaches. The MRI then indicated an intracranial hemorrhage due to the fall he suffered on October 19th.
The president was transferred to the São Paulo unit, where he underwent a craniotomy to drain a hematoma.
The PT member is in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for monitoring.
Disagreements between Lula and Maduro
The relationship between Brazil and Venezuela — and, consequently, between Maduro and Lula — was strained this year after the Venezuelan presidential election.
The Brazilian government did not formally recognize Chavista’s victory, as announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE) of the neighboring country, asking for the release of detailed electoral records.
Lula even suggested that the Venezuelan government hold new elections or form a “coalition government”.
The issue sparked outrage in Venezuela, and Maduro demanded that the world “respect the sovereignty” of the country at the end of August.
Shortly afterwards, on September 6, the PT member said in an interview that the Chavista leader has behavior that “leaves something to be desired”.
In another tense episode in the relationship between the nations, the Venezuelan police threatened Brazil with a post with a blurred image of Lula, saying: “Anyone who messes with Venezuela will be in trouble.”
Still, on November 12, Maduro praised the Brazilian head of state after he said he would not question Venezuela’s justice system — which ratified his supposed victory in the July 28 presidential elections.
