The Americas’ top human rights agency urged Argentine authorities to respect people’s freedom of expression on Thursday (4), following reports that police used excessive force against peaceful protesters and journalists.
The statement by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) comes after demonstrations on June 12 in front of the Argentine Congress. The protests were against a controversial bill linked to the economic reforms of Argentine President Javier Milei.
“We are concerned about the disproportionate use of public force against journalists and individuals participating in peaceful protests in Argentina, as well as the acts of violence perpetrated by citizens during these protests,” the IACHR stated.
Footage showed a car on fire during the protest, with protesters scattered around throwing rocks and bottles. Watch below:
