HRF said the main beneficiaries would be supporters of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. The funds would be used to support democratic efforts against the current political regime. The cryptocurrencies would be deposited directly into the opposition’s accounts, bypassing state control.
“In the context of political chaos and unrest in Venezuela, HRF aims to use the decentralized nature of Bitcoin as a tool for economic freedom to attract international support for democratic change,” the Foundation said in a statement.
Earlier, Maria Machado said that “Bitcoin has gone from being a humanitarian tool to a critical tool of resistance” that will play a major role in Venezuela’s future recovery from economic mismanagement and authoritarian rule.
In February 2022, a similar campaign to raise funds in cryptocurrency for the benefit of participants in the national protest movement was carried out by the organizing committee of Canadian truckers “Freedom Convoy”. It managed to attract about $19 million in digital assets.
