A new attempt to take humanitarian help to the besieged city of Mariupol, in southeastern Ukraineand evacuating civilians is being held this Saturday (12).

The city is under heavy fire from the forces of Russia more than a week ago, and the Mariupol council said on Friday that nearly 1,600 people had been killed.

On Saturday, the board announced that “a green corridor is open. A humanitarian convoy left Zaporizhzhia for Mariupol. More than 90 tons of food and medicine are going to the city, which has been under siege for 11 days.”

The council said that for the second day in a row, Orthodox Church priests had joined the convoy.

The Mariupol “green corridor” is one of several announced by the Ukrainian government to bring humanitarian aid to areas most affected by the fighting and help thousands of people leave areas without energy and water and under heavy bombardment.
