The United States said on Thursday that the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate and called on Israel to do more to allow continued access for aid from both the south and north of the Palestinian territory.
State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel addressed the issue during a daily briefing. According to him, Washington's concern is that travel and the flow of fuel to Gaza through the Rafah crossing “have completely stopped.”
“Humanitarian conditions on the ground (in Gaza) continue to deteriorate and vital borders have been closed,” Patel said. “At a time when it is crucial to increase the movement of aid, we are working tirelessly to increase assistance through all available means to address the impacts of this crisis,” he concluded.
The State Department spokesman made it clear that the United States will continue to pressure Israel for more aid to arrive in Gaza. “We have and will continue to pressure Israel and other partners in the region to ensure the safety of humanitarian actors and activities, open additional land crossings and remove impediments to the delivery of humanitarian aid, and do more to ensure that aid can reach the places it need.”
