Humanitarian tragedy in Gaza puts pressure on Joe Biden, says professor

After taking immediate steps to support Israel, such as sending aircraft carriers, United States President Joe Biden faces a dilemma among his Democratic electorate.

So much so that the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, traveled to Israel to talk this Friday (3) with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the offensives against the Gaza Strip.

In addition to the growing international condemnation of the deaths of civilians during the Israeli response against Hamas, Joe Biden faces opposition among Americans, in the assessment of Augusto Teixeira, professor of International Relations at UFPB and Visiting Professor at King’s College London.

“In a way, this affects the domestic public in the United States, including part of the Democratic public, which was responsible for Biden’s election,” he highlighted in an interview with CNN Radio highlighting Muslims living in the US.

“It is pressure that Biden is under, in a context in which even former president Barack Obama signals the relevance of moderating the use of force.”

Even without adhering to the defense of a ceasefire, like other countries on the United Nations (UN) Security Council, Joe Biden began to publicly ask for a humanitarian pause to guarantee supplies to the Palestinian population in Gaza.

The problem, according to Augusto Teixeira, is that this pause is out of the question for Israel.

“If Antony Blinken manages to negotiate this effectively with Israel, it will be positive as a point for Biden in the international community and will also show Israeli sensitivity. But the problem is that a pause like this, even though it is not a ceasefire, gives Hamas time to reorganize itself”, he ponders.

Teixeira claims that Israel wants to suffocate Gaza because the supply of possible humanitarian aid could be diverted by militants from the Islamic group. The professor also pointed out that the creation of a humanitarian corridor to bring refugees to Egypt is also “off script” for the Egyptian government.
