Hungarian Foreign Minister Defends Border Fences, Criticizes EU Officials

The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his government’s solidarity with the Baltic States and Poland on the issue of increasing migration flows. Of Hungary, Peter Siyarto.

During his visit to Estonia, the Hungarian Foreign Minister also criticized the EU’s stance on building fences on its external borders.

“When we hear bureaucrats and commissioners in Brussels speak out against the fences on our borders, we sometimes wonder if these people live on the same planet as us.”, said Mr. Sigiarto after the meeting of nine foreign ministers of the countries of the so-called east wing of NATO.

The governments of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland accuse Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately bringing refugees from war-torn countries and sending them to their territories in retaliation for European sanctions against his government.

In May, Mr Lukashenko said Minsk would not prevent Immigrants and refugees moving to EU member states.

Since then, the flow of migrants has increased dramatically.

Poland, Lithuania and Latvia responded by increasing border guards and erecting hundreds of kilometers of barbed wire fences.

At EU level, there has been a lot of debate lately about whether and to what extent this is the right approach.

“Unfortunately we got used to the pressure from the south, but now we have to deal with the pressure from the east as well.”, insisted the Hungarian Foreign Minister.

For Mr Sigiartos, Immigration is now “an even more dangerous phenomenon than before”.

To prevent the passage of refugees and migrants, Viktor Orban’s government erected fences on Hungary’s borders with Serbia and Croatia when the 2015 crisis erupted.
