Hungary: Rapid increase in cases with 5,270 new infections

Hungary reported 5,270 new cases of coronavirus today, a sharp increase from 3,005 recorded a week ago as the Omicron variant spreads.

Omicron is responsible for more than 11% of new cases, the government said.

Despite the increase in cases, the number of patients being treated for coronavirus is 3,090, from 3,854 a week ago.

In Hungary, a country of about ten million people, 39,599 people have died from complications of COVID since the beginning of the pandemic.

The government of Victor Orban, which will face elections in April and opposes lockdowns for fear of hurting the economy, has stepped up its vaccination campaign since November.

He now gives vaccines to everyone without having to make an appointment and a booster dose for children aged 12 to 17 years.

Schools reopened this week.

Today’s data show that 5.99 million people are fully vaccinated, while 3.19 million have been vaccinated with the third dose.

Hungary has made mandatory the booster dose for healthcare workers and vaccinations mandatory for all teachers.

From the end of November, protective masks are mandatory for most interiors.
