Hungary strengthens forces on border with Ukraine amid escalating crisis

Hungary will deploy an unspecified force near its border with Ukraine, both for security reasons and for humanitarian action, the Defense Ministry announced today on its Facebook page.

Many Eastern European countries are preparing to receive potentially hundreds of thousands of people who will want to leave Ukraine if the crisis with Russia escalates.

“Hungary’s security is the most important thing, we are strengthening the Ukrainian-Hungarian border,” the statement said. The ministry added that defending the border and preparing a humanitarian mission are equally important projects. He did not say how many troops would be deployed.

Defense Minister Timbor Benko said the development was necessary in the event that the conflict in eastern Ukraine extends to the border with Hungary, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

Earlier in the day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban convened a national security council and told the defense minister to prevent armed groups from crossing the border.

Military exercises involving NATO and US forces are scheduled for this week in western Hungary.
