Hungary: United Opposition Holds 3% Lead Over Fidesz Ruling

Hungary’s united opposition maintains a three-point lead over Prime Minister Victor Orban’s ruling Fidesz party in a poll by the think tank Republikon published today.

For the first time since taking office in 2010, the 58-year-old Orban will face the united front of the opposition in the April elections.

At the forefront are the Democratic Coalition, the Socialists, the Liberals and Jobbik, a former far-right party that has shifted to the center-right.

According to the Republikon poll, the united opposition has 36% of the vote, while Fidesz has 33%. One in four voters is undecided.

The results of the poll are similar to the results of a poll conducted earlier this year, which means that the united opposition has not expanded its influence by winning voters, following the brief rise of Peter Markey-Zai to the leadership. of the opposition in October.

Inflation hit a 14-year high last month, forcing the central bank to raise interest rates significantly more than expected.

In the run-up to the election, Victor Orban last month imposed a fuel price hike to protect consumers from further price increases, while addressing new employees, families and retirees, announcing tax cuts and wage increases.
