Hurricane Beryl becomes “extremely dangerous” and reaches category 4

Hurricane Beryl has become an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm in the Atlantic Ocean and is expected to bring potentially fatal winds and flash flooding to the Caribbean’s Windward Islands as it rapidly strengthens on Monday, it said. the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The first hurricane of the 2024 season was located 565 km east-southeast of Barbados on Sunday morning (30), with maximum sustained winds of 215 km/h, the NHC said in a statement.

It is rare for a major hurricane to appear so early in the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. This Sunday, Beryl became the first Category 4 hurricane recorded this season, surpassing Hurricane Dennis, which became Category 4 on July 8, 2005, according to NHC data.

Hurricane warnings were issued for Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago.

The NHC warned those islands to brace for up to 6 inches (15 cm) of rain. It said Beryl would raise water levels up to 9 feet (2.74 meters) above normal tide levels where the hurricane makes landfall.

Last month, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted “above-normal hurricane activity” in the Atlantic in 2024, in part due to near-record warm ocean temperatures.
