The center of Hurricane Beryl was 165 miles (257 kilometers) southeast of Grand Cayman, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (210 km/h), according to the National Hurricane Center.
Hurricane-force winds extend up to 45 miles (72 kilometers) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 190 miles (308 kilometers).
Some weakening is forecast over the next day or two. But Beryl is forecast to be at or near major hurricane intensity when it passes through the Cayman Islands on Thursday (4).
“Further weakening is expected after that, although Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane until it makes landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula on Friday. [5]”, the National Hurricane Center said.
Mexico has issued a Hurricane Watch for Cozumel. It has also upgraded its Tropical Storm Watch to a Tropical Storm Progreso Watch for Campeche.
Death in Jamaica
At least one person has died in Jamaica as a result of Hurricane Beryl, bringing the death toll from the storm in the Caribbean to at least eight.
A woman died in Hanover Parish, Jamaica, on Wednesday after a tree fell on her home, Joyce Reynolds Robinson, a spokeswoman for the country’s disaster preparedness agency, told the CNN .
At least three people died in Venezuela, three died in Grenada and one person died in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
A flash flood warning is in effect across the country until Thursday (4) due to “continuous periods of heavy rain,” the country’s Meteorological Service said Wednesday night.
“A flash flood warning is in effect until 5am tomorrow morning. [hoje, no horário local]”, the service said.

The service warned that heavy rains “could be accompanied by strong, gusty winds as the hurricane moves away from the island’s west coast.”
The Weather Service also lifted its hurricane warning.
“With Jamaica now out of the reach of hurricane-force winds from Hurricane Beryl, and with the storm no longer posing a threat to coastal areas of the island, the Hurricane Watch is being discontinued effective immediately.”
He said “rainfall associated with Beryl will, however, continue to affect parts of the island, increasing the chance of flash flooding.”
The service said the center of Hurricane Beryl was 65 miles (105 km) south-southwest of Negril Point, Jamaica.
