Hurricane Beryl upgraded to category 4 and heading for ‘extreme danger’, threatening Caribbean

Hurricane Beryl strengthened further today and is heading towards the Caribbean with “extremely dangerous” winds of more than 200km/h, posing “potentially fatal” risks to the Caribbean islands. Beryl, which upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane overnight, was upgraded to a Category 4 storm, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced. The hurricane, which was located 565 km from Barbados, continued to strengthen and was expected to make initial landfall in the Windward Islands on Monday morning, the NHC said. A weather event of this scale is extremely rare early in hurricane season – which runs from early June to late November in the US. The islands of Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada were placed under surveillance. Yesterday Saturday, Martinique, Dominica and the island of Tobago were placed under a tropical storm watch. Source: RES
