According to the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Fiona will strengthen as it moves into the Atlantic.
In its most recent forecast, the hurricane center said that “the center of Fiona will pass near or east of the Turks and Caicos Islands on Tuesday (20)”, where 100 to 200 millimeters of rain are forecast.
The northern and eastern parts of the Dominican Republic will also be affected by tropical storm conditions, with an additional 250 to 500 millimeters of rain, according to the hurricane center.
Some local areas could receive up to 250 millimeters of rain in total, according to the forecast.
As the storm turns to the north-northwest, it will strengthen in the coming days and “become a major hurricane on Wednesday,” according to the forecast. Hurricane-force winds can extend up to 30 miles from the storm’s center.
The hurricane center said Puerto Rico will see more rain and tropical storms on Monday.
The southern parts of the island can see an additional 100 to 200 millimeters inches of rain.
All this rain will produce “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding and landslides in Puerto Rico,” the forecast said. Most of the island remains without power, local officials said.
