Hurricane Ian dead to 106 as Florida ramps up rescue operations

Search and rescue teams in Florida returned to examining tens of thousands of homes and businesses on the Gulf Coast on Monday, following an initial sweep of areas devastated by Hurricane Ian, with the death toll in one of the deadliest storms savages to hit America exceeding 100 people.

Emergency crews have made quick inspections of about 45,000 properties since Ian made landfall last Wednesday, inundating waterfront communities with high waves that washed away several buildings, said Kevin Guthrie, director of emergency management at Florida.

“We’ve been to almost every address,” he said, noting that teams began to conduct a more thorough search. “We believe we scoured everything very quickly. Now let’s go back for a second look.”

He added: “I’m not saying we won’t find anyone else. We can find other people.”

At least 106 US storm-related deaths have been confirmed since Ian struck the US with catastrophic force as a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 240 km/h.

Florida was responsible for the majority of the deaths, with 78 counted in the adjacent coastal jurisdictions of Lee and Charlotte counties, and a further 21 deaths reported by officials in nine other counties.

North Carolina officials said at least four people died there.
