Hurricane Milton: Florida Governor warns that new deaths can be avoided

At least 16 people died in Milton’s path of destruction — which brought destructive storms to parts of Florida’s west coast and deadly tornadoes to the east.

Although Florida is in mourning, any new deaths from the storm’s aftermath can likely be prevented if residents follow warnings, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

Before making landfall, the outer reaches of Milton spawned a series of tornadoes Wednesday in St. Lucie County, causing deaths.

“It’s very difficult to prepare for tornadoes. You need to protect yourself and hope for the best,” DeSantis said this Friday (11) during a press conference in St. Petersburg.

But “we are now in a period where there are deaths that can be prevented,” he said.

“We have had deaths due to interaction with power and water lines. We are seeing dangers that still exist. So be careful. Don’t enter the floods. Be careful when using stairs. Use generators correctly – make sure they are outside your home,” the governor added.

“We are now in a situation where everything has stabilized – and therefore appropriate decisions need to be taken,” he said.

Milton is also no longer a hurricane, according to an update from the National Hurricane Center on Thursday (10).

Hurricane Milton leaves deaths and destruction

Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a dangerous Category 3 storm, generating strong winds and rain, as well as flooding and tornadoes.

It weakened to Category 1 as it crossed the state and moved offshore, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Still, the storm left a trail of destruction, roofing houses, knocking down trees, poles and a crane.

Sixteen people died after the hurricane hit, according to authorities.

Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year, leaving more than 3 million people without power in the state. Wind gusts of 100 mph were recorded near Tampa.
