Hurricane Milton has strengthened to category 5, now having winds of 257 km/h. The storm is in the midst of an “exceptional outbreak” of rapid intensification. It has strengthened 152 km/h in the last 24 hours.
The storm joins Hurricane Beryl as the second Category 5 storm of the season. Beryl peaked as the first Category 5 hurricane while in the Caribbean Sea in early July.
Still, Category 5 hurricanes are still exceptionally rare. Only 40 hurricanes have become so powerful in the Atlantic, according to data from NOAA, the United States meteorological agency.
Before this season, only two Category 5 hurricanes had made landfall in the basin in the 2020s: Ian in 2022 and Lee in 2023.
