Hurricane Milton is the first to pass within 50 miles of Tampa in more than 100 years

Hurricane Milton is the first to pass within 80 km of the city of Tampa, Florida, in 100 years. This comes during a particularly difficult storm season for the state.

The hurricane reached 289 km/h, becoming the strongest ever at the end of the season in the Gulf of Mexico. It is also tied for sixth strongest anywhere in the Atlantic Basin at any point this year.

Hurricane Milton is also the third major storm to hit Florida this year. Hurricanes that have passed through the state include Debby, Helene and now Milton.

The storm is also the fifth Gulf hurricane to make landfall this year, tied for second with 2005 and 2020, behind only 1886.

Hurricane Milton leaves deaths and destruction

Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a dangerous Category 3 storm, generating strong winds and rain, as well as flooding and tornadoes.

It weakened to Category 1 as it crossed the state and moved offshore, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Still, the storm left a trail of destruction, roofing houses, knocking down trees, poles and a crane.

Twelve people died after the hurricane hit, according to authorities.

Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year, leaving more than 3 million people without power in the state. Wind gusts of 100 mph were recorded near Tampa.
