Thousands of Floridians are in public storm shelters due to Hurricane Milton, according to Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday afternoon.
“We have more than 30 thousand individuals [em abrigos]but we have space for more than 200,000 individuals”, highlighted DeSantis.
The governor said there are approximately 150 state and local shelters in the region. At least one shelter in each county under a shelter-in-place order accepts pets, DeSantis added, and at least one in each county can accommodate people with special needs.
To encourage people reluctant to leave their homes, the governor stated that many shelters are equipped with Wi-Fi connected to Starlink internet systems, so everyone can stay connected.
“Look, it’s not the Four Seasons (hotel),” DeSantis relaxed, “but there are some things there that will make the space tolerable to get through the next 24 to 36 hours.”
Almost unprecedented rapid intensification
Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified to a nearly unprecedented level, reaching Category 5 status due to record heat in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Currently, it is in category 3 and has had an updated route, allowing it to arrive in Florida at 11pm this Wednesday (9), local time.
It is expected to grow in size, meaning that while it may shrink in category, its dangerous impacts will be spread over a much larger area.
Hurricane Milton was considered the strongest storm on the planet in 2024, with sustained winds of 281 km/h.
Recently, Hurricane Helene made landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast as a storm surge and made landfall in the swamp region as a Category 4 hurricane.
Authorities are asking residents — still recovering from Helene’s damage — to evacuate or prepare for another life-threatening storm.
