Tropical Storm Oscar left at least six people dead in Cuba, President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Monday (21), a day after hitting Guantánamo as a category one hurricane.
According to the latest report from the Institute of Meteorology, Oscar was downgraded to a tropical storm after it began to weaken on Sunday (20) and is forecast to weaken further in the coming days.
The storm hit the far east of Cuba and most of the damage was reported in Guantánamo province, with the municipalities of San Antonio and Imias reporting historic flood levels Díaz-Canel told government media.
Rescue operations and damage assessments continue on the Caribbean island, which has faced months of power cuts and was already suffering from severe shortages of food, fuel and medicine.
