South Korean actor Hwang Inyoup is one of the protagonists of the drama “Family by Choice”, which premiered on October 9 on Rakuten Viki streaming. In an interview with CNN he revealed that fans will have the opportunity to discover a romantic side of himself that has never been explored before.
In the plot, the concept of “family” is different from the description in the famous Titãs song. Instead of “dad, mom, auntie”, the story revolves around two single parents, neighbors, who without the presence of a mother figure decide to join forces to raise their three children together.
The main characters are Sanha (Hwang Inyoup), the son of a sergeant, and Juwon (Jung Chaeyeon), the daughter of a cook who adopts Haejun (Bae Hyeon Seong). The three grow up together, despite having no blood ties.
Upon becoming adults, Sanha and Haejun choose to leave in search of their families, while Juwon stays behind. A decade later, they meet again and must confront the mistakes of the past.
Check out what Hwang Inyouup thinks about his character and more details behind the scenes of the drama:
Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about love languages. How does your character demonstrate the feeling?
Kim San Ha is not very good at comforting others with kind and caring words, but he understands and cares for others more than anyone else. He expresses his love through actions instead of words.
What similarities and differences do you have with Kim San Ha?
Just like San Ha, I’m not particularly good at speaking very softly and kindly. I usually show my feelings through actions, silently, making sure the other person feels it. The difference is that I think I’m a little more cheerful and lively than San Ha. I believe that when you watch the drama, you will easily notice the differences between us. Among all the characters I played, San Ha speaks the least, but is the warmest and most profound.
How do you prepare for more dramatic scenes in dramas? What is it like to break character when the director says “cut”?
I try to focus on my co-star and connect emotionally with them while expressing my feelings. Instead of trying to break character, I constantly strive to remain as close to Kim San Ha as possible throughout the filming period.
As an actor, do you find it more challenging to make an audience laugh or cry?
I think they are both very difficult, and I really can’t choose between them. I believe that the hardest thing in the world is to touch people’s hearts.
Do you like watching yourself on screen? How does it feel to see your own performances?
Instead of enjoying it, I often criticize myself, thinking, “Couldn’t I have done better?” Lately, I’ve been trying to be more positive and think, “What if I loved myself a little more?” If I keep criticizing myself, I feel like I’ll end up regretting it and missing out on these moments. So now I’m trying to cherish every moment and be kinder to myself.

Is it a spoiler to ask if you have kissing scenes in this drama? How did you prepare for them and were you nervous?
Yes, there is romance. I think you’ll see a side of my romantic performance that you’ve never seen before. I’m really curious and excited to see how you guys will react to this. Both Chaeyeon and I were quite nervous during filming, but we tried to ease the tension by playing and creating a comfortable atmosphere. We tried really hard to make the romance feel genuine. I hope everyone likes it.
We want to get to know you better. What artists are on your playlist?
Lately, I’ve been really into rock bands, so I’ve been listening to Day6 and N.Flying a lot. In the morning, I usually listen to NewJeans, and I also really like Baek Yerin’s songs. When I want to feel a little calmer, I love listening to Lee So Ra songs.
Have you noticed your Brazilian fans sending messages like “Eu te amo” and “Come to Brazil” on social media? Could you send them a message?
To all my fans in Brazil, thank you so much for your love and support from afar. I sincerely hope to be able to visit them someday. I wish everyone health and happiness. I will continue to work hard to show my best. Thank you and I love you, Brazilian fans!
