Hydration is important to avoid the effects of heat; doctor gives tips for avoiding high temperatures

Hydration is essential to overcome the effects that high temperatures have on the body, according to cardiologist Ricardo Costa.

A CNN Radio he explained the best ways to beat the heat that has hit much of Brazil in recent days.

“The functioning of the body depends on an ideal temperature, which is regulated based on hydration,” he said.

According to the expert, exposure to extreme heat activates the body’s mechanisms to maintain that temperature.

“Initially, there is vasodilation, where fluid is lost from the cardiovascular system, there is a drop in blood pressure, malaise, dizziness and even fainting,” he warned.

The cardiologist highlighted that adequate hydration and avoiding excessive exposure to the sun are important to overcome these effects.

Ricardo Costa drew attention to risk groups, such as the elderly and children, who should be alert to high temperatures.

According to the doctor, it is not necessary to interrupt physical activity, which is preventive for heart disease, but rather avoid the strongest exposure time.

“Applying sunscreen, being in ventilated environments, limiting exposure, wearing hats and clothing that limit the effects of solar radiation are measures that are effective,” he added.
