Hyundai commissions quantum computing to improve battery performance

South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor has partnered with quantum computing company IonQ to jointly conduct a range of research to improve the performance of car batteries for future electric vehicles. As part of the partnership agreement, the companies will conduct various quantum calculations to study lithium compounds and various chemical reactions of this substance that occur in lithium-ion batteries. IonQ scientists should simulate these chemical reactions to help develop the latest electric vehicle batteries for the foreseeable future.

Accordingly, Hyundai Motor engineers will design new battery designs for electric propulsion vehicles, and IonQ experts will investigate the chemical reactions in these designs in a computer model format. This will allow the car manufacturer to quickly analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the latest developments without the need to create physical prototypes for real tests. Moreover, representatives of the South Korean giant believe that joint efforts will not only save time, money and labor resources, but also create new types of lithium compounds that will increase the efficiency of batteries.

For example, Hyundai Motor expects that quantum computing will eventually allow a significant increase in the number of battery charge cycles before it fails completely, while increasing the overall capacity and safety of the electric propulsion battery. And given that the battery and its development are considered the most expensive in the production of the entire electric car, the ability to reduce costs and time to create more efficient products can really play into the hands of Hyundai’s future solutions.
