What many have been waiting for has happened: Hyundai has finally fully presented its Ioniq 5 electric crossover with a non-trivial design. The novelty is doubly important for us – Hyundai Motor CIS, represented by Alexey Kalitsev, Managing Director, has already announced its desire to start selling this electric vehicle in Russia at the end of this year.

Despite the fact that there are other electric vehicles in Hyundai’s range, the Ioniq 5 was the first model of its kind: it is built on the new E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) platform. Modularity means the possibility of producing cars of different classes and sizes on its basis. Let’s say, potential Ioniq 3 and Ioniq 7. But that is the future, and CUV Ioniq 5 is the present.

With its exterior, the Ioniq 5 is unlike any of the current electric vehicles, and in this regard, it compares favorably with the already familiar Tesla cars or “licked” electric Volkswagen. The Ioniq 5 is as distinctive as the Honda e. And this is good.

The exterior of the Ioniq 5 is also very different from what everyone is used to seeing in regular Hyundai. The creators call the car interior “living space”, and this is perhaps the best definition: inside, it really resembles a modern, bright small studio. In front of the drivers, there is a 12.25-inch display with hand-drawn graphics, another screen of a similar size is installed in the center console and is used as part of the multimedia and entertainment system.

There is also a third screen – HUD, which displays speed, navigation tips, speed limit warnings. This screen allows for less distraction from the road. The car is also equipped with comfortable Zero Gravity seats with a lot of adjustments and additional legroom.

There are no traction batteries of large capacity under 100 kWh, like Tesla has, so the power reserve is not as great as we would like. The capacity of the basic traction battery is 58 kWh, the maximum mileage in this case is 320 km according to the WLTP method. The traction battery capacity of the Long Rage version is 72.6 kWh, the power reserve is 470 km (WLTP). This means that the real mileage on one charge in the first case will be about 270 km, in the second – about 420 km. In the basic version, the car is rear-wheel drive, for a surcharge – all-wheel drive. And – and this is interesting – the Ioniq 5 has four options for the power of the power plant:
- Rear-wheel drive version with a traction battery with a capacity of 58 kWh: 170 hp;
- All-wheel drive version with a traction battery with a capacity of 58 kWh: 235 hp;
- Rear-wheel drive version with 72.6 kWh traction battery: 218 hp;
- Four-wheel drive version with 72.6 kWh traction battery: 306 hp
The top-end version takes 5.2 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h, and the base rear-wheel drive version takes 8.5 seconds.
The Ioniq 5 supports fast charging. For example, in five minutes of connecting to a 350 kW terminal, the traction battery gains a charge sufficient to cover 100 km. And it takes only 18 minutes to charge 10 to 80 percent of the battery capacity under these conditions. Unfortunately, such powerful charging stations are not present everywhere, and replenishment of energy from conventional terminals takes much longer: the car will be charged for the same 70% from a 50 kW charging station in an hour.

In the modern world, an electric car is not only a vehicle, but also a source of backup power, and such a function is implemented in the Ioniq 5: there are two V2L connectors in the car through which you can power a house, some electrical equipment or, for example, recharge an electric bike or electric scooter. The maximum power for this reverse charging is 3.6 kW.
There is also the possibility of free recharging from the sun – due to the solar panel in the roof. It generates energy per year, which will be enough to cover over 2000 km (about 5-6 km per day). True, this calculation is valid for sunny regions like Spain or the south of France, in our latitudes (even in Sochi) the efficiency of a solar battery will not be so high.

Of course, the Ioniq 5, being a modern electric car, received a lot of electronic assistants. These include: Highway Driving Assist 2, HDA 2, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), intelligent speed limiter (Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, ISLA), driver monitoring system (Driver Attention Warning, DAW), etc.
And now the most important thing is the prices. So far, the cost of the top-end welcome version of IONIQ 5 Project 45 has been announced. A total of 3,000 such cars will be produced at a price of 45,000 pounds (or 4.7 million rubles). The IONIQ 5 Project 45 is already available for pre-order with a deposit of £ 1,000. It is, of course, very expensive, but the basic versions of the car will cost much less. So, the approximate price of a rear-wheel drive Ioniq 5 with a traction battery with a capacity of 58 kWh is about $ 30,000 or euros, depending on the country. That is, in Russia for the Ioniq 5 they will ask for about 2.7-3.0 million rubles.
In the UK, several other European countries and the home market, the Ioniq 5 will go on sale in the coming months. We recall that the start of sales is scheduled for the end of the year, but if something does not go according to plan, it can be postponed to 2022.
