The unequivocal condemnation of ND MP Haralambos Athanasiou’s statements about the advisability of monitoring Muslim MPs was expressed by PASOK – KINAL Rodopis MP Ilhan Ahmed and PASOK – KINAL MP Burhan Baran.
Mr. Ahmet complains that Athanasios’ statement “revives the theory of the internal enemy in the face of heterodox and Muslim MPs”, as in addition to the intolerance he cultivates, “makes the Minority MP suspect of committing acts of national humiliation and therefore worthy of monitoring .”
Concluding, he characteristically notes that “After the case of the president of our Movement, Nikos Androulakis, we are facing a new institutional slippage.”
For his part, Mr. Baran notes that Mr. Athanasios’ statement cultivates a spirit of dogmatism and intolerance. “Stigma on account of religious beliefs within a privileged and constitutionally protected Republic, is unequivocally condemned and reprehensible, as the free functioning of our democratic polity demands,” he adds.
Ilhan Ahmed’s statement in detail:
“I unequivocally condemn the public position – statement of the vice-president of the Parliament, Charalambos Athanassios, which revives the theory of the internal enemy in the face of heterodox and Muslim MPs.
This statement, in addition to the spirit of intolerance that affects public morals, makes the Minority deputy suspect of committing acts of national humiliation and therefore worthy of monitoring.
The political system of our country and the Parliament must defend the constitutional freedoms of the citizens and not separate the MPs themselves according to their religious beliefs. After the case of the president of our Movement, Nikos Androulakis, we are facing a new institutional slide.”
And Burhan Baran’s statement:
“The statement – allusion by the Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament and member of the ND, Mr. Athanasios, with which he referred to the Muslim members of parliament as potential suspects of national treason and therefore it would be “legitimate” to monitor them, cultivates a spirit of dogmatism and intolerance. Stigmatization due to religious beliefs within a privileged and constitutionally protected Republic, is unequivocally condemned and reprehensible, as the free functioning of our democratic polity demands.”
The statement of Athanasios
Earlier today, Charalambos Athanasiou, ND MP, deputy speaker of the Parliament and former Minister of Justice, arguing that surveillance for national security reasons is legal, referred to an example he gave to Muslim MPs.
“Let’s say an MP has a completely different religious orientation than the Orthodox. Let’s say a Muslim MP from Northern Greece – we’re not saying there’s no edge, by God. Let’s say he gives some information to the neighboring country, where the immigrants will come from etc. Why shouldn’t it be checked? National Security comes first here,” Mr. Athanasiou had said. He added that “if the procedure provided for by the legislator is followed, of course, and I’m mentioning it to you. I’m mentioning it to you because I’ve noted it, I’ve been waiting for this question, I’m reading to you what the implementing, executive law of the Constitution says, what the Constitution says us in article 19. It says literally: Law defines the guarantees under which the judicial authority is not bound by secrecy for reasons of national security”.
