A man was arrested on Friday (16) in Rio de Janeiro, suspected of torturing his stepdaughter, a four-year-old girl. The case is being investigated by agents of the 37th DP (Governor Island).
According to the Civil Police, the child was admitted to a very serious condition at the Institute of Childcare and Pediatrics Martagão Gesteira (IPPMG), UFRJ. Examinations pointed to intestinal drilling, arm fracture and abdominal sepsis.
According to doctors, the girl arrived at the hospital on the edge of death after suffering four cardiac arrests and presenting vomiting and multiple bruises on the body. It remains hospitalized, intubated and at risk of death.
With the repercussion of the case, the civil police of the 37th DP began investigations and had access to messages between the stepfather and the mother of the child. In one of them, the man wrote:
“She is strong because I’m shaping in pain. It gets weak when it’s just love.”
The phrase caused indignation among the investigators, who classified the content as a “evident practice of torture.”
Investigations also revealed that the child was forced to eat feces and often locked alone in dark bathrooms. The aggressions were recurring and, according to police, camouflaged with justifications such as “falls” or “accidents”.
For investigators, the case does not only constitute domestic violence, but a process of systematic torture, with signs of unusual perversity even among similar crimes.
“We are facing a real executioner. The coldness of messages, the pattern of aggression and the deliberate omission of help show a terror scenario that had been dragging on for months,” said Deputy Felipe Santoro, head of the 37th DP.
In another conversation, the mother confronts her partner:
“I saw you giving her a knee just because she didn’t want to eat.”
The man responds with bad words and denies the aggressions violently. The girl had already suffered a fracture on her arm, which the couple tried to justify as a “fall of the bed.”
Israel Lima Gomes, known as “Rael”, was arrested in the Patience neighborhood of Rio’s West Zone. He already had two criminal notes: one for domestic violence and one for sexual harassment. According to police, the suspect offered no resistance at the time of prison and denied the aggressions, referring to the victim as “love”.
In testimony, the mother of the child also denied having assaulted her daughter and said she was a “domestic accident.” CNN has found that it may be responsible for omission and eventually for co -participation in torture.
The delegate stressed the importance of denouncing cases of suspected abuse and abuse:
“Even if it seems late, it is still fundamental. Only then we can act in time and prevent monsters like this from going destroying lives,” said Santoro.
