Housewife Jacqueline Nunes da Silva, 33 years old, and her son, Kaylan, who was born prematurely last Sunday (24), were discharged this Tuesday afternoon (26). Jacqueline was eight months pregnant and was one of the 30 survivors of the bus accident in Serra da Barriga, in União dos Palmares (AL). She was hospitalized at the Hospital Regional da Mata, a public health unit in the city.
She would visit the top of the mountain in a program that celebrated Black Consciousness Month in a place considered historic and sacred.
“I am the mother of a miracle”, the housewife was thrilled shortly before leaving the hospital.
The housewife was in the back of the vehicle. “After the accident occurred and the bus overturned and rolled down the bank, I managed to support myself on a tree that was broken. I held onto the trunk of that tree and started waiting for help”, recalled Jacqueline, who had left her other two children at a family home.
As soon as she was rescued by a person from the community, whom she has not yet met, she was transported to the hospital. The health team assessed that emergency surgery (cesarean section) would be necessary to ensure the health of the mother and baby.
“The service was very quick.” The baby was born at 6pm, a time that she had previously predicted would be at sunset in Serra da Barriga. Everything changed overnight.
“I had gone to have some fun. I didn’t imagine all this would happen.”
The memories of the screams inside the bus are still strong for the housewife. But, at this moment, the mother’s greatest desire is to find her other two children at home. “I’m going to give them a hug. God gave me another chance to be better.”
Two steps
Another survivor of the bus accident in Serra da Barriga was content producer Matheus Nunes, 23 years old. He was the only person who got off the bus as soon as the driver found there was a problem with the vehicle. “When the driver said that it was no longer possible for the bus to go up, due to a hose having burst, he warned us that we would have to wait for another transport to continue the ascent.”
The driver, according to the report, calmly turned off the bus, opened the door normally and the bus stopped at the scene.
“I went down and took two steps. When he turned to look at the people coming down, that was the moment when people screamed. Those who were standing came back and sat down in fear, thinking it was just a matter of stopping the bus.”
Matheus despaired when he saw the vehicle going backwards at high speed and without control. “When I managed to get in touch, I asked them to call all the city’s firefighters, police and anything else that would provide support to save the lives that had fallen from the cliff.” He remembers that residents entered the forest to try to help. “So it was possible to save so many lives.”
