I believe we can be the future of the auto industry, says Biden

The United States should return to the leadership of the global auto industry with investments mainly in electric vehicles and specific public policies that guarantee supplies to the productive sector with the manufacture of semiconductors.

The expectation is from President Joe Biden, who spoke this Wednesday (14), at the Auto Show in Detroit.

“I believe that we can resume and be the future of the automotive industry in the world. We are America and there is nothing we can’t do if we work together,” Biden said in a boastful speech that was applauded by the audience.

Biden has united automakers and auto workers around the bold goal that electric vehicles make up 50% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. by 2030. Since taking office, companies have invested nearly $85 billion in making electric vehicles, batteries and vehicle chargers in the country.

Companies including Toyota, Honda, Ford, General Motors and Panasonic have announced manufacturing investments in North Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Kansas and other US states.

According to information provided by the White House, the pace of this investment is accelerating. In 2022 alone, companies announced $13 billion in domestic electric vehicle manufacturing, more than triple the investment in 2020.

US companies also announced $24 billion for batteries – more than 28 times the investment in 2020 – and more than $700 million to support electric vehicle charging. Thus, according to government information, the number of electric vehicles sold in the US has tripled since the president took office.

“I am optimistic about our investments in people. In building an America that fights for clean energy,” said Biden, referring to the “Made in America” program, which spurred the manufacture of electric vehicles, chargers and batteries.

The Inflation Reduction Act, achieved by the current administration, offers incentives for buyers of new and used electric vehicles, credits to help manufacturers retrofit existing facilities and build new factories in the United States, and concessions to deploy heavy emission vehicles. zero.
