President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Thursday (9) that he was “amazed” during the meeting he had with US President Joe Biden at the Summit of the Americas. In an interview with CNN after the bilateral meeting, Bolsonaro said that he and Biden “share the same perception”.
“It was exceptional, I’m very happy. I can say that I am in awe of him. I’m not wrong to say it this way. We spent almost half an hour talking privately,” the president told reporter Leandro Magalhães, CNN’s special envoy to Los Angeles.
Bolsonaro said Biden “agrees” with the Brazilian government regarding the Amazon, highlighting Brazil’s role in environmental preservation.
“We talk openly about the Amazon, then privately, [ele] agree with us. She is very big. Brazil is an example for environmental preservation around the world. We face the issue of clean energy, such as wind power.”
According to the Brazilian president, Biden pledged to collaborate with the maintenance of democracy and freedom.
“At the private meeting, which is obviously a state secret, he pledged to collaborate with us, as civilized nations do, for the good of our peoples, and the maintenance of democracy and freedom. […] We share the same perception. It was good for him and it was good for me.”
During the televised part of the meeting, Bolsonaro raised suspicions about the Brazilian presidential race and defended “free, reliable and auditable elections”.
