“I cried out to God and started to reverse”, says driver who fled armored car explosion in SP

A 50-year-old businesswoman was just a few meters away from the robbers who blew up two armored cars on the Washington Luís Highway, near Cordeirópolis, in the interior of São Paulo. The case happened late this Monday afternoon (8) and was recorded by roadside monitoring cameras. See images below.

In a telephone interview with CNN the driver, who will not be identified, opens up about what happened: “I cried out to God and started to reverse”.

The woman who appears in the images says that she was returning home after a day of work in another city, when she noticed unusual movement on the road. “I saw other people with their cars on the side of the road and asking to stop,” she reported.

She also said that she initially thought it was an accident. “I stopped little by little, other people started stopping. I didn’t realize it was a robbery, I didn’t hear gunshots.”

The businesswoman said that she even saw a truck and two armored cars stopped on the road, imagining that they were involved in an alleged collision. Soon after, she heard another driver warn that it was a robbery, but shortly thereafter there was the first explosion, also recorded by the cameras.

With the impact, an iron plate that was part of the back of the armored car flew towards the woman's car, hitting the vehicle's bumper. “My car moved because of the impact it hit so hard,” she said.

When trying to reverse again, the driver realized that the car was not working, so she decided to leave the car and flee on foot along the highway with just her bag in her hands.

In the images captured by the highway cameras, it is possible to see the businesswoman running in the opposite direction from where the criminals were. A man who was also passing by the place by car ended up giving her a ride.

Day of robberies in the interior of São Paulo

This Monday (8), a bank and two armored cars were targets of robbers in the interior of São Paulo. Authorities also recorded an attempted robbery of a third armored vehicle.

Heavily armed criminals armed with explosives invaded a bank branch in the city of São Pedro and left a loss of R$200,000. There was an exchange of fire with the police, but no one was injured in the incident.

While the police were still working to investigate this crime, two armored cars were stolen after an explosion on Rodovia Washington Luís, near Cordeirópolis.

Subsequently, a third armored car was targeted by criminals in the city of Piracicaba. The gang's action was thwarted by the action of the vigilantes.

The police went to the home of one of the suspects, where there was an exchange of gunfire and he ended up dying. Rifles, ammunition, explosives and more than R$100,000 were seized at the scene.
