United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was not concerned about reports of an increase in Russian troops along the Finnish border.
“No, I don’t … I worry about it,” Trump said at the White House when asked about it. “They will be very safe,” he said, referring to Finland and Norway.
Finland has faced friction with Russia since mid -2023, when he joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATA). At the time, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the neighboring country would face “problems.”
The entry of the Nordic country to the organization marked a major change in the security scenario in northern Europe and added about 1,300 kilometers to the alliance border with Russia. It was also a blow to President Putin, who has been a lot of alert against NATO expansion.
Norway, in turn, is not part of NATO, but has problems with the Russians due to disputes for territories in the Arctic.
In 2022, Russia threatened “retaliation measures” not specified against Norway after suffering restrictions and goods blocks for Russian population settlements in the Svalbard archipelago.
Svalbard, which is halfway between the north coast of Norway and the North Polo, is part of Norway, but Russia has the right to explore the archipelago’s natural resources under a treaty signed in 1920, and some settlements are populated mainly by Russians.
