Considered one of the greatest cartoonists in Brazil, Laertes is successful every time it produces a new strip or comic. Used to working with just her and her pencil, the artist revealed that she feels insecure about adapting her work as it ends up being a job involving many hands. “We feel insecure, as if something is out of our control”, explained Laerte during the CCXP Unlock pre-event Comic Con Experience 2023 .
“It’s a confusing feeling because I basically work alone, like most comic book authors,” explained the artist. “Partnership is not a very common experience, but I have learned a lot since my first experiences in participating in teamwork, collective work, which was in this case TV Pirata, then TV Colosso – and it was the first time I I saw my eggs being part of another omelet, entering a more complex composition.”
“It’s a double feeling because we feel insecure, as if something is out of our control. The authorial idea is also an idea of control, right?”, explains Laerte. “So having more people, for better or for worse, you feel like ‘they’re going to ruin my work’. And in the end they don’t ruin it, because it’s an intervention from another dimension than that of the comic.”
A creation by Laerte will leave the world of comics to grace the big screen. “Overman” was adapted for theaters and will be released soon, a production by Starplus and Migdal Filmes.
Iafa Britz, head producer at Migdal Filmes, also participated in the panel this Wednesday (29). brings to CCXP23 the first feature film about a Brazilian superhero. “We were always careful to bring a comic from the 90s to 2023, 2024 for the film. I’m obsessed with the idea of ’will Laerte like it? Did she like it?”, brina Iafa. “It was a very fun process, challenging in terms of revisiting – our challenge was and is how to maintain Laerte’s DNA and at the same time turn it into a film, a work that people who don’t like They knew Overman and will get to know them.”
Overman, created by Laerte, is a Brazilian superhero
“Overman won me over as soon as I saw him undergoing therapy”, explains Iafa. “We needed to create this Brazilian superhero with the Brazilian characteristics that Laerte exposed, which is a Brazilian superhero who passed a public contest to be a superhero.”
According to Laerte, the inspiration came from the already existing universe of superheroes. “When I say that we work alone, it is only partly because we are immersed in this culture that we frequent”, he explains. “When I was young, I watched a lot of television, read a lot of comic books, so superhero stories were a big part of my education.”
According to the artist, she wanted to make a parody of this universe of superpowered people. “I like superheroes and I have a national point of view on the subject. So I started using a superhero figure in the strips to make a cartoon, using typical superhero adventure situations, with evil scientists, incredible villains, to put it in a quick joke context. I think the first one was him in a traffic situation, with him stopped in a taxi, and the driver asks ‘don’t you fly?’, and he says ‘no, today is a rotation’.”
The actor Caco Ciocler will be responsible for bringing Overman to life on the big screen.
Laerte will also be on a national cinema panel and in Artists’ Alley at CCXP 2023
In addition to the panel she participated in during CCXP Unlock this Wednesday (29), Laerte is also confirmed to take to the Ultra Stage at Comic Con Experience this Thursday (30). The panel “Super Productions of National Cinema – The Hijacking of Flight 375 + Overman” will start at 5pm.
In addition to the lectures, the artist will also be among other talented comic artists in Artists’ Alley, at tables K01-02 to display her work.
