President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said on Sunday night (26) that he intends to announce in the coming days the name of retired Army General Walter Braga Netto as vice on his ticket who will run for the Presidency of the Republic in this year’s elections.
Also affiliated with the PL, Braga Netto was Minister of the Civil House and Defense in the Bolsonaro government. He left office at the end of March due to a requirement not to hold public office to run for elective office in October, as provided for by electoral law.
In recent days, the name of former Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina (PP) has also been considered as Bolsonaro’s deputy. The president, however, dismissed the information and confirmed the general for the position, in an interview with Programa 4 por 4.
“We have other excellent names, such as Tereza Cristina. General Heleno [Augusto Heleno, ministro-chefe do Gabinete de Segurança Institucional da Presidência] almost was my deputy back there. (…) Vice is just one. I wish I could nominate ten, then there would be no problems,” she said.
Bolsonaro highlighted the general’s resume, saying he has a “life of 45 years of service in the barracks”.
“He was an interventor for approximately a year in Rio de Janeiro, he came to our government, took on the difficult mission of the Civil House during the pandemic, went to the Ministry of Defense and disincompatibility in order to be free there to run for an elective position. So, he is a person I admire a lot,” he said.
When talking about the topic, the president also complained about the position he holds. “This chair is a terrible thing when you want to do the right thing. It’s pressure from all sides,” he said.
