I. Kasoulidis: Sanctions in Russia may have consequences in Cyprus as well

Developments are sad and contrary to international law. These are military operations inside Europe, something we had avoided since the end of World War II, said in a written statement the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus Ioannis Kasoulidis.

He points out that according to the picture we have so far, we condemn the military invasion against an independent, sovereign and territorially complete country.

He states that the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis, has made arrangements to be in Brussels, where the extraordinary Summit will take place in the evening, and notes:

“Certainly the EU will not respond militarily but by imposing sanctions. We must be prepared because sanctions may have an impact on all Member States, including Cyprus.” I repeat that decisions will be made in a spirit of unity, which is the most powerful weapon we have.

“We call for the last ceasefire to be avoided in order to avoid casualties among civilians and to return to the diplomatic route.”

Regarding the Cypriots who are in Ukraine, he said that the Crisis Management Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been activated and is available to the citizens for the provision of consular assistance and possible implementation of evacuation plans.
