‘I know how the Ukraine-Russia war can be ended’, says Bolsonaro, without mentioning the way

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said today that he knows how to find a solution to end the war between Russia and Ukraine and that he will make his proposals to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom he is due to speak by phone next week .

“I will tell him my opinion, what I think. The solution for this. I know how it can be found. But I will not tell anyone,” Bolsonaro told reporters during a visit to the northeastern state of Maranao.

“The solution to this case will be similar to how Argentina’s war with the United Kingdom ended in 1982,” he said, without elaborating.

Argentina and Britain briefly fought in 1982 over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic, known in Argentina as the Malvinas. The war began in April 1982 when Argentine armed forces landed on the British-controlled islands and Britain sent a naval force to retake them. Argentina’s poorly equipped troops stood little chance, and Argentina surrendered two months later.

Bolsonaro has a scheduled phone call with Zelenskiy on July 18. He emphasized that the Ukrainian leader was the one who requested the communication and that the Brazilian president immediately agreed to it.

The Brazilian president visited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow in February, just days before Russia invaded Ukraine. Bolsonaro has so far taken a neutral stance on the Ukraine war as Brazil wants to continue trading with Russia.

Earlier this week, the country said it was looking to buy as much diesel as it can from Russia, which is also a major fertilizer supplier to South America.

“This war has caused enormous disruption. Less for Brazil, much more for Europe,” Bolsonaro said.
