“I love you”: Student sends message to mother after school shooting in US

Erin Clark was at work on Wednesday morning (4) when she received a series of text messages from her son Ethan saying: “Shooting at school right now.”

Clark said to CNN that her son, a senior in high school, heard eight or nine gunshots before closing the classroom door. He and another classmate moved chairs and tables to block the door.

In the translation of the conversation, Ethan wrote: “I’m scared, please, I’m not joking.”

“I’m leaving work,” the mother replied.

“I love you,” the son says next.

She replied, “I love you too baby. Where are you.”

“Class. Someone’s dead,” Ethan said.

“I just saw an ambulance and police heading this way,” she replied.

The mother said she and other parents were not allowed to drive on the road to school, so they parked on another street and walked.

“When we got to school, they directed us to go to the soccer field and find our kids,” Clark told CNN . Later, she found Ethan safe in the stands.

She said to CNN who was “absolutely terrified” when she read her son’s messages and “kept praying that he would be safe.” Clark said she was “in total shock that this was actually happening.”

At least four dead in school shooting

At least four people were killed and nine injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, according to local police.

Other police sources told CNN that there may be up to 30 people injured, although it is unclear how many of the injuries are from gunshot wounds.

A 14-year-old suspect has been detained, but it is unclear whether the individual actually attends the school, sources said. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed in a post on X that one person was detained. The agency added that rumors that the suspect was neutralized are false.

The US has seen hundreds of mass shootings inside schools and colleges over the past two decades, with the deadliest resulting in more than 30 deaths at Virginia Tech in 2007.

The attack has sparked a fierce debate over U.S. gun laws and the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which enshrines the right to “keep and bear arms.”
