The death of singer Gal Costa, one of the biggest names in Brazilian popular music, this Wednesday (9), at the age of 77, is a shocking loss for MPB and especially for a group of friends and life partners. The Bahian artist alongside Maria Bethânia, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil formed the Doces Bárbaros. Bethânia, very emotional, spoke in a video about the loss of her friend.
“In shock, too sad, too difficult. I never thought of one day coming to you to talk about the pain of losing Gal”, said the singer in the video, published on her official profile on Instagram.
“The Brazil that he always enchanted with his unique, masterful voice, today cries all over. Friend that even from afar I always maintained admiration and respect. May God receive her in her pure light”, concluded Bethânia.
Gilberto Gil also used his Instagram account to say goodbye to his friend.
“Our little sister is gone. Gal, whom she called Gaucha. I miss her, for everyone who was close to her and for so many people in the expanse of this immense Brazil that was enchanted by her singing. Now her singing stays with us for the rest of our lives, for the whole time of our history”, said the singer.
Doces Bárbaros was a group formed by the four artists in 1976 to go on a tour of Brazil.l to celebrate ten years of success in their individual careers.
The success of the union of the four was such that it became a show, record and documentary film. In 1994 the quartet was honored by Estação Primeira de Mangueira, a samba school of the special group in Rio de Janeiro, as the theme of the association that year.
