US President Joe Biden has recorded two interviews with black radio stations in key states that will air on Thursday (4), the White House said at a press conference on Wednesday (3).
A CNN interviewed host Earl Ingram of Civic Media’s “The Earl Ingram Show” in Wisconsin, who released an excerpt from the conversation with Biden in which the Democrat addresses his performance in the debate against Donald Trump on June 27.
“I had a bad night. And the fact is, you know, it was – I screwed up. I made a mistake. It’s 90 minutes on stage. Look what I’ve done in 3.5 years,” the US president said.
The full interview will air on Thursday morning (4).
Ingram, who appeared on the show “Erin Burnett Out Front” CNN said Biden did not “seem to me to be showing signs of a guy who is ready to throw in the towel.”
The White House has insisted Biden will not drop out, despite pressure from some Democrats.
The interview comes as Biden follows advice from key allies to step up his profile in the public eye following his performance in the CNN and the resulting turbulence.
In addition to Earl Ingram of “The Earl Ingram Show,” Biden spoke with Andrea Lawful-Sanders of “The Source” in Philadelphia, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Wednesday (3).
The interviews mark Biden’s latest move to right the ship and calm intraparty anxiety after his performance in the June 27 debate. The strategy aims to reassure voters that the US president is up to the task of another term.
Biden is scheduled to meet with Democratic governors later Wednesday (3). He will travel to Wisconsin on Friday (5), where he will give an interview to ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos.
The US president will also travel to Pennsylvania on Sunday (7). And next week, Biden will hold a press conference at the NATO summit in Washington.
It remains unclear whether these moves will allay concerns about the president’s age — with all eyes on Biden and how he handles more casual, off-the-cuff moments amid mounting pressure within his own party.
