The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, said in an interview with journalists this Sunday (12) that the effort to rescue Brazilians in Gaza was “all from the government”, when asked about the alleged actions of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) . “Besides, I think it’s misinformation,” he added.
“I can say that all the effort for the liberation of Brazilians, all since the beginning, since the seventh, was made by President Lula’s government, under his instructions and daily monitoring,” he said.
“I was the interlocutor for all contacts with all governments involved. And that is what resulted in the successful conclusion of this agreement. That’s what I can say and that’s what exists. Furthermore, I think it is misinformation”, he added.
Bolsonaro reportedly met with Israel’s ambassador, Daniel Zonshine, on Wednesday (8), at the National Congress. The chancellor was asked about possible “malaise” between the Lula government and the ambassador.
“I don’t know”, he limited himself to saying.
The former president’s advisor said that Bolsonaro and the ambassador did not meet alone and that they did not discuss political issues involving the Brazilian government’s positions on the conflict.
The former president also says that he spoke with Yossi Shelley, one of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s advisors, and that he asked the Israeli government for support in releasing Brazilians.
“Successful” exit of Brazilians in Gaza
Still in a press conference today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the operation to withdraw Brazilians from the Gaza Strip today had a “successful conclusion”.
Brazilians authorized to leave the Gaza Strip managed to cross the border with Egypt and leave the Palestinian territory this Sunday morning.
Of the 34 people who asked the Brazilian government to be repatriated – 24 Brazilians and 10 close Palestinian family members –, who were granted authorization to leave Gaza in a list published last Thursday (9), 32 crossed the Rafah border crossing for the first time since the beginning of the conflict.
“Everyone wants to be the father of victory,” said Frederico Meyer, Brazilian ambassador to Israel, in an interview with CNN this Sunday, when asked about the possible participation of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
“You know that phrase: ‘Victory has many fathers, but defeat is an orphan’? What I can say is that our work to free these people did not happen in an afternoon. We had been working for four weeks”, said the ambassador.
