“I want a pizza”: The phrase – a cry for abused women in Italy

New ways to combat violent behavior of partners and spouses focus on International Women’s Day the Italian media.

It happens in Turin and Milan, but also in other Italian cities. Pizza, the most famous Italian dish, has become a “motto” and a valuable ally of women. More and more people are calling the police and carabinieri in their area, as broadcast by the Athens News Agency, and asking for help in a different way, even if their violent partner is next to them at home at the time.

“I would like a pizza,” they tell the policeman who answers them. When the police ask them if they are safe, they answer “no”, give their home address (for the delivery of the supposed pizza) and after a few minutes, women and men of police and carabinieri arrive at their home to help them.

As Italian commentators point out, any new, ingenious way is welcome in order to reduce the violence (psychological and physical) to the detriment of women, which in recent months in Italy is showing a new, worrying increase.
