A construction worker who narrowly escaped a building that collapsed in Bangkok after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake reached Thailand and Myanmar, told the CNN How were the moments after the tremor.
Sunan Kenkiat, 31, was working on the building’s fire sprinkle system before he collapsed on Friday (28). The Thai government said at least 81 people are trapped under the rubble.
“I was shaking and I felt dizzy,” Kenkiat told CNN over the moment the high building began to swing.
According to him, after that, “wreckage like pieces of cement began to fall, and the tremor got stronger, so I shouted for everyone to run.” He says he heard three booms and his eyes filled with white dust – and he learned that the building was about to give in.
“After the crash, I couldn’t see anything. I was just running to find a way out,” said Kenkiat. “I started looking for my co -workers. Things got chaotic, and people were starting to leave.”
“My body was covered with white dust,” he said. “When I left, the rescue team helped clean. I thought that if I couldn’t help the cement slab, I could have died due to dust.”
Three members of the Kenkiat team were arrested in the building, he said. “Right now, we’re still waiting, hoping the rescuers find them.”
A team from CNN On the ground in Bangkok reports having seen waves of rescue teams responding to the collapse site. K9 dogs were seen being brought to sniff survivors.
