The American television presenter Martha Stewart 83 years old, shared details about the period she was imprisoned. The businesswoman, who was sentenced to five months in prison in 2004 for using privileged information to benefit from the stock market, recounted her experiences in a federal prison in the documentary “Martha” which premieres on the 30th on Netflix.
During her stay at Alderson Federal Prison Camp, known as “Camp Cupcake” because it has minimum security, the TV star reportedly faced some setbacks, such as being isolated in a solitary cell, where she was deprived of food and water for a day. The serious punishment came after she accidentally touched a prison officer
In an excerpt from her diaries, read in the documentary, Martha describes the moment: “Today I saw two very well dressed ladies walking and I passed them quickly, commenting on the beautiful morning and how elegant they looked. When I realized from the big silver keychain that they were agents, I lightly touched the chain. I was later called in and warned to never, ever touch a guard without expecting severe punishment.”
In an interview for the film, Martha stated that she apologized for the situation and considered that the incident had been “insignificant”, therefore, she was shocked by the severity of the punishment she received.
“I was dragged to solitary confinement for touching a guard. No food or water for a day. That was Camp Cupcake, you know? That was the nickname. Camp Cupcake. There was nothing like cupcakes.”
The documentary also shows the living conditions in prison. The artist claimed that her accommodation was uncomfortable and unsanitary.
“My room has a metal bunk bed with springs and a metal frame. The springs are very loose, which makes the bed unsanitary. I would actually prefer the top bunk, but over 62 you automatically get the bottom bunk.”
Famous for her cookbooks and lifestyle shows, Martha also criticized the quality of prison food: “What concerns me is the poor quality of the food and the unavailability of anything fresh; just starches, carbohydrates, lots of fatty foods. Nothing is pure. Everything was terrible.”
The presenter began serving her sentence in September 2004 and left the place in March 2005.
