A total of 11 bodies with “bullet wounds” were found yesterday in Benghazi, Libya’s second city, according to a security source, who said that it is alleged that these were “executions”.
“Security forces were informed of the eleven bodies at the southern entrance of Benghazi, in the area of al-Hawari, near the cemetery,” the source told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.
After blocking the area, members of the security forces who rushed to the area found that the victims were wounded by bullets.
Libya is trying to get out of the chaos, after a decade of conflict, which followed the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Fighting stopped in the summer of 2020 and earlier this week a new, transitional government took over to lead the country to elections.
In the eastern part of the country, which is controlled by the forces of General Khalifa Haftar, the situation remains precarious and executions and clearing of accounts are common. The marshal’s opponents often fall victim to retaliation. In October 2017, 36 alleged jihadists – 19 of whom were foreigners – were executed and their bodies, which bore the marks of torture, were left in a barren field.
