A woman in Great Britain came in for one surgery kidney removal and when she woke up she saw her hand look like… head shark. The incident happened in Petersborough when doctors sewed the woman’s own hand into her stomach to fight an infection. A video documenting how the hand was finally made now has over 75 million views on TikTok.
“I did not know my hand would look like a shark’s head until it was actually released from my abdomen,” said Sadie Kemp, 34, of her bizarre condition, the Mirror reported.
In the video, which she “did not expect to go viral”, the 34-year-old seems to make her hand “sing softly” the theme of the movie “Shark Jaws” before dipping it in a bowl of water.
How a simple surgery ended in a battle for her life
Kemp’s near-fatal ordeal happened on Christmas day after the former healthcare worker came to the hospital after severe pain in her kidney. Doctors diagnosed her with a kidney stone and took her to the emergency room to have her removed.
The disaster struck during the operation, after the limbs of the mother of two children were injured sepsis, a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body tries to fight infection and ends up attacking and damaging its own tissues. It is the leading cause of death in hospitals, often resulting from complications during surgery.
To save her life, doctors put Kemp in a medical coma for 11 days and ended up amputating all the fingers of her left hand, Peterborough Today reported. Doctors then stitched her arm into a hollow in her abdomen to maintain blood circulation, which Kemp said caused the arm to become shark-like.
“I looked at it for the first time and moved what was left of my thumb and said, ‘Wow, it looks like a shark.'” In a clip with 4 million views, she seems to make the shark’s hand synchronize her lips with the song “Baby Shark” like a fleshy shadow puppet.
Unfortunately, the woman has not yet overcome the problem, as doctors reportedly have to amputate her other arm and both of her legs below the knees, according to Peterborough Today.
In addition, Kemp, who recently lost her job at the NHS, fears she could also lose her home, which was given to her by a charity following a financially devastating divorce.
