“I went after beauty and ended up being mutilated”, says victim of investigated doctor

Patrícia de Siqueira Oliveira, a caregiver, had a hole opened in her belly after cosmetic surgery carried out with doctor Josias Caetano dos Santos, the same doctor who is being investigated for the death of 31-year-old businesswoman Paloma Alves, who died after undergoing a hydrolipo at the clinic Maná Day, in the east zone of São Paulo, last Tuesday (26).

Attracted by the promise of a beautiful body, Patrícia decided to undergo cosmetic surgery, after a recommendation from an acquaintance and an attractive price. But she ended up paying an extra price when trying to save money. “I had the surgery, everything went well, then after that, 15 days post-operatively, my belly opened and there was a hole”.

Faced with the complication, Patrícia sought out Josias Caetano dos Santos, who minimized the problem, stating that the wound would close on its own in 60 days. However, the situation quickly worsened. “Two hands could fit inside my belly, everything was necrotic in my belly”, reveals the patient.

According to Patrícia, the doctor did not offer adequate treatment. “He doesn’t do anything, he doesn’t help us with anything, everything is fine with him.”

The woman also shared that her luck was the intervention of a drainage professional who realized the seriousness of the situation. Upon noticing the hole in Patrícia’s belly, the professional warned about the risk to her life. ‘If it weren’t for her, I would have died just like Paloma,’ says Patrícia, remembering the moment of despair.

The decision to perform the surgery with the doctor was influenced by the installment payment offered by him, however, what seemed like a good deal turned into a nightmare.

The need to correct the medical error resulted in additional expenses. “I had to spend a lot more money than planned, there was no point paying cheaply, it was expensive because I had to spend a lot more, I went after beauty and ended up being mutilated”, she laments.

Regarding hygiene in the clinic, Patrícia shared that it was perfect, but the post-operative room did not have adequate structure or hygiene.

Upon learning that Paloma Alves died after the hydrolipo, carried out by the same doctor who operated on her, Paloma felt shaken: “Everything came back, the past continued in the present. Because then the bullet hurts us even more, right? We actually believe that justice, because we are chasing justice, is already two years old.”

Other victims

We spoke with Sonia Maria Costa, who reported the loss of two nipples after breast reduction surgery, carried out with doctor Josias Caetano dos Santos in 2020.

“My experience was terrible”, he says. Sônia says that the doctor appeared to be attentive and professional, but that, in her opinion, the post-operative care left something to be desired. “He just looked, sent me home and prescribed ointments and antibiotics”, he says.

In another case, physiotherapist Deise Faria paid R$20,000 in installments in one year to realize what was a dream for her: an abdominoplasty and a mastopexy with a prosthesis to improve her self-esteem. However, the surgeries resulted in a necrotic belly.

Reports

The doctor is already responding to at least 22 cases of negligence in the São Paulo Courts.

According to lawyer José Beraldo, who represents the victims, there are cases of women mutilated and with huge scars after undergoing procedures with the doctor. “Women who went looking for beauty and found horror, that’s the truth,” declared the lawyer.

Doctor has already been convicted of error in surgery

Josias Caetano was already convicted by the São Paulo Court for an error in one of his surgeries. In 2013, he had to compensate a patient with R$20,000 for moral damages.

The surgery took place in 2007. According to information from the case, after breastfeeding three children, the victim was unhappy with the shape of her breasts and decided to undergo silicone implant surgery to improve her self-esteem. According to the record, the procedure was carried out in a hospital in the capital with Josias.

In a statement, the São Paulo Regional Council of Medicine (Cremesp) stated that, based on the facts reported in the press, it is investigating the case. “The investigations are carried out under secrecy determined by law,” he says.

Paloma’s death

According to the incident report obtained by CNN Paloma underwent the aesthetic procedure on the back and abdomen, known as hydrolipo, but during the treatment, she went into irreversible cardiorespiratory arrest.

As soon as she went into cardiorespiratory arrest, EMS was called and she was taken to Tatuapé Municipal Hospital, where she arrived dead. In the hospital unit, pulmonary embolism was identified as the probable cause of death.

In an interview with CNN doctor Josias Caetano, stated that he has a “clear conscience” and that he wants the case to be “clarified”.
