The United States Supreme Court ruled this Friday (17) that the law that could block TikTok in the country could come into force this weekend.
In an interview with Pamela Brown from CNN, President-elect Donald Trump stated that, “at the end of the day, it’s up to me, so you’ll see what I’m going to do.”
The decision was “per curiam”, that is, signed by the panel as a whole and not by a specific judge. There were no reported disagreements between the judges.
It was taken rejecting an appeal from the platform that claimed that the ban violates the American Constitution.
The move puts the spotlight on President-elect Donald Trump.
“At the end of the day, it’s up to me, so you’ll see what I’m going to do,” he said.
Asked if he would take steps to try to reverse the pending ban, the Republican said he would “make the decision.”
“Congress gave me the opportunity, so I will make the decision.”
Conversation with Chinese leader
The president-elect also confirmed that he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping, reporting that they had “a great conversation about TikTok and a great conversation about many other topics.”
In preparation for the ban’s effective date, President Joe Biden’s administration signaled that it would leave enforcement of the ban to Trump, who will be inaugurated on Monday (20).
Despite this, TikTok reported that it may “be left in the dark” when the ban comes into effect.
A Biden administration official told CNN on Thursday (16) that the Democratic president plans to leave it to Trump to enforce any ban.
“Our position on this has been clear: TikTok must continue to operate under American ownership,” the Biden administration official explained. “Given the timing of it coming into effect on a long weekend, the day before the inauguration, it will be up to the next administration to implement.”
TikTok CEO Shou Chew is expected to sit on the dais alongside other leading tech CEOs at Trump’s inauguration — perhaps a sign of how serious the new president is about trying to save the app.
And with some in Congress now suggesting that TikTok may need more time to find a buyer, the president-elect may find support for trying to delay the ban until a later date.
