The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued this Saturday (11) a resolution with requests to the Brazilian government regarding the whereabouts of indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira and English journalist Dom Phillips, who have been missing in the Amazon since last Sunday (5) .
The group asks Brazil to “redouble its efforts to determine the situation and whereabouts” of the duo and “report on the actions taken in order to investigate with due diligence the alleged facts that gave rise to the adoption of this precautionary measure and, thus, avoid its repetition”.
According to the IACHR, the decision to issue the resolution came after the commission “considered that they are in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to their rights”.
“Following the complaints about the disappearance, the request states that the state efforts would not have been immediate and would only have started with the intense mobilization of civil society, the national and international press and social networks. It is alleged that the measures adopted so far would be insufficient considering the extension of the territory and other technical challenges”, says a note sent by the IACHR.
“The commission noted that the situation of the proposed beneficiaries would be widely known to internal entities, that there were internal judicial decisions at different levels that determined the immediate adoption of all necessary measures to locate both disappeared, and that, despite this, they are still missing,” adds the IACHR.
Also according to the note, “the granting of this precautionary measure and its adoption by the State do not constitute a prejudgment of a petition that may be presented to the inter-American system about a possible violation of the rights protected in the applicable instruments”.
The IACHR is an autonomous body linked to the Organization of American States (OAS) and its objective is “to promote the observance and defense of human rights in the region”.
